I am the 3rd cousin 3 times removed of former President of the United States of America, President Harry S. Truman. Our common ancestor is Michael Gutknecht born about 1695 in Germany.

They may have moved to Texas to escape the civil war. Also, I found genealogy information posted online that reveals Elizabeth ( Goodnight ) Stephens had relatives living in Texas ( SEE URL Links below ).

Joshua and Elizabeth ( Goodnight ) Stephens became parents to a son named Thomas Evan Stephens. Thomas Evan Stephens married Susan A. Bugg. Thomas Evan and Susan ( Bugg ) Stephens are my great grandmother and grandfather. Thomas Evan Stephens and Susan ( Bugg ) Stephens are the 2nd great grandfather and grandmother to my nieces and nephews.

Thomas and Susan ( Bugg ) Stephen’s daughter is Sarah Elizabeth Stephens. Sarah Elizabeth Stephens married Andrew Gaffney. Andrew and Sarah Elizabeth ( Stephens ) Gaffney are the mother and father of our Dad, and grandpa Joseph.

My Dad’s mother and father, Andrew and Sarah Elizabeth ( Stephens ) Gaffney, passed away when my Dad was a very young child. My Dad was raised by his sister Ruby and brother in law Jimmy. My Dad never knew his mother and father. It was more difficult to do genealogy research way back than, before dawn of the compute age, and very few people had the time or resources to dedicate to genealogy research.

A number of years ago our family traveled to Perryville, Kentucky to visit the Goodnight cemetery. According to information we discovered, the confederate army confiscated the home of Jacob Goodnight during the battle of Perryville, and converted the farmers home into a field hospital for wounded soldiers. Recently, I found a website posted by a long lost cousin, Amy Brown Sosa. Another very interesting historical fact is that we have family ties with a former President of the United States of America, President Harry S. Solomon Young (born January 9, 1838 in Shelby County, Kentucky) is son of Jacob Young and Rachel Goodnight. Rachel Goodnight is daughter to our 8th great grandfather and grandmother, Hans Michael Goodnight and Mary Landers (Rachel Goodnight is the sister to our 7th great grandfather John Goodnight. Rachel Goodnight married Jacob Young December 16, 1792 in Mercer County Kentucky.

Rachel Goodnight is the great grandmother of former President Harry S. Truman, sister to our 7th great grandfather John Goodnight, daughter to our 8th great grandfather and grandmother, Hans Michael Goodnight and Mary Landers.
